DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING, STORYBOARDING
Annabel Parkin for the Manchester Museum
On show until 2031 in the Manchester Museum’s award-winning Lee Kai Hung Chinese Culture Gallery
In 2021 I was commissioned by the Manchester Museum in partnership with Maya Vision International to create a documentary film exploring the presence and complexity of the Chinese community in the Northwest.
Working in a team of three, we shared the responsibilities of filming with BlackMagic 4K cameras and capturing audio, using Adobe Premiere Pro to splice, colour correct, and adjust audio in post production.
I wrote and structured our script, and conducted the interview with Feixia Yu, moving the conversation from initial fact-finding and scene-setting to a more philosophical discussion of Qigong, Daoism, and multiculturalism.
As well as enhancing my storytelling and technical skills, this film developed my project management skills, as I coordinated and budgeted for the movement of our team and equipment to and from Preston.
Storyboarding
In preparation for filming I created some story boards to help us visualise the framing of each scene, considering how our story could be enhanced visually.
I tried to capture a sense of movement, serenity, and power in my illustrations.
Now, I am excited by the prospect of developing my interest in film alongside my love of drawing. Keep scrolling to see my drawings and their inspiration.
